This project has been developed as a mock translation assignment. The source material is an English documentary-style script that discusses climate change — its causes, effects, and possible solutions. The purpose of this project is not only to practise translation skills, but also to demonstrate how a text of global importance can be effectively communicated in another language, while retaining accuracy, tone, and cultural relevance.

The translation presented here has been done from English into Bengali. While English serves as the source language, Bengali has been chosen as the target language in order to make the content accessible to a wider South Asian audience. The process highlights how language plays a crucial role in spreading awareness about serious global issues such as climate change.

This project also interprets translation not just as a mechanical word-for-word exercise, but as an act of adaptation. Care has been taken to preserve the urgency and seriousness of the original script while making the Bengali version fluent, natural, and easy to understand. Complex scientific terms have been translated into simple Bengali expressions, ensuring clarity for a non-specialist audience. At the same time, the documentary tone of the source has been maintained in the target text to give the translation an authentic feel.

It must be noted that this is a mock project interpretation and not an official publication. The objective is to show how translation can bridge linguistic gaps and make critical knowledge — in this case about climate change — accessible to communities that may not engage with the original English text. In doing so, the project underscores the role of translation in education, communication, and global awareness.

The source text is an informative article on climate change and its impact on human life, taken as an excerpt for translation practice. It is written in clear English for a general audience, raising awareness about health risks, economic pressures, and food shortages caused by global warming. My aim in translating it into Hindi (Roman script) was to keep the meaning accurate while ensuring the style remained simple and natural for general readers. Since the topic involves scientific and social issues, I balanced accuracy with readability, avoiding overly technical words that could distance the audience. For example, terms like asthma, allergy, and greenhouse gas were kept in commonly used forms, while longer sentences were broken into shorter ones for easier understanding.

In approaching this translation, I followed a communicative strategy, prioritising clarity and accessibility over literal word-for-word transfer. The challenge was to preserve the serious and urgent tone of the source while adapting it into Hindi expressions that feel familiar and persuasive. I also chose Roman script Hindi to make the translation more accessible for online readers and younger audiences who are comfortable reading Hindi in English letters. Overall, the translation aims to spread awareness of climate change in a way that is both accurate and impactful, encouraging readers to see it as an issue that directly affects their lives.

For my translation project, I have chosen an excerpt from the UNICEF survey on young people’s perspectives across generations. The source text, originally in English, was published in 2022 and reports on a study of over 22,000 young people across 21 countries. The survey explores how today’s youth compare their lives with those of their parents, focusing on issues such as education, safety, healthcare, mental wellbeing, and the impact of technology.

I have translated this passage into Bengali, presenting it in essay form while keeping close alignment with the original structure and meaning. This project allowed me to engage with both the technical precision of translation and the cultural nuances required to render concepts like mental health and digital privacy in an accessible way for Bengali readers. My translation aims to demonstrate accuracy, clarity, and readability while remaining faithful to the tone of the source text.
